Thom Racina Special Guest
by Tish & Patrick, December 14, 2009
Best-selling author, television writer and all around great guy, Thom Racina, was our special guest teacher at our last Tuesday night writing group. He mesmorized everyone with a fascinating personal story. I am amazed at the out-put of this guy. Currently he is co-writing (with our Susie Bedsow Horgan) a prime time tv series call Adams Morgan about young, hip Washingtonians, a script a week since August for The Young & the Restless, finishing up a new thriller called Guardian Angel (I count six thrillers). That’s not all, check out his bio. I couldn’t believe how many soaps he was head writer for and that he wrote The Happy Hustler but then I’m old enough to remember the Happy Hooker (it’s a take-off!). He was jazzed by teaching and we hope to have him back in the spring. Thanks Thom. www.thomracina.com
The recent Write Yourself Free workshop, which I was lucky enough to co-lead with Patrick McCord, was born out of a two hour presentation that Patrick and I presented at the Wilton Library on the concept of freeing yourself to write what is inside you that wants to be written. The result was many months of watching a group of fine writers emerge. Their voices got stronger and clearer in the process of reading aloud to each other, identifying and then managing their fears and “issues” about being writers and Patrick’s superb tutelage. They are all on their way to writing bigger pieces that I believe will lead to publication one day. This kind of writing workshop really works. It encourages, shapes and calls forth the innate writer in all of us. And it was an honor for me to witness the participants’ processes and to make a small contribution toward their success.
We all have a voice. Finding it is a discovery of self. Feeling free and excited about sharing it has been the wonderful result of working in the Write Yourself Free environment. The special talents of Patrick and Susie, together with the members of my group, have truly helped me to set sail. Unexpected surprises such as my renewed quest to unravel life’s simple joys through creative exploration has been incredibly liberating. A recent guest appearance by Thom Racina, who captivated our group in sharing both his personal and writing career journeys helped to galvanize the idea that dreams can come true! He is doing what he loves, and Thom’s infectious style and honesty, are a most cherished gift that will continue to entertain and inspire us.
